5 Basic Steps on Troubleshooting your Computer

Need a help on troubleshooting a computer? before calling a technical help and paying for the service fee, you may want to check out your computer by yourself. A little common sense may help you out solve simple computer problems, both hardware and software.

Follow these basic steps:

• If your computer freezes or stops responding, hit the numlock button, its a good indicator when your computer hangs, if the led light does not blink, then it stops responding therefore you need to restart it. Your system will correct themselves when you do.

• Check your cables. Check the electric power. Plug some other devices like lamps or fans into the same power outlet that's connected to your PC to make sure the outlet is working. Mouse, Keyboard and other hardwares not responding? Make sure its plugged in.

• Listen for uncommon sounds.Is the cooling fan on the processor running? Is the hard drive making unusual noises? try rebooting your computer, it is also helpful sometimes that you replug the wires connected to your hard drive and if that does not work then you may consider replacing it, but you should consult your technician first.

• Are you hearing a beep sound when you boot your computer and black display on your monitor? it is probably your RAM (Random Access Memory). Try unplugging your RAM then get an eraser, rub the eraser into the teeth of the RAM (the one with the little golden stripes on the tip of it) and re-plug it. This solution works most of the times.

• Look inside the computer for wires that aren't plugged in all the hardwares which makes faulty connections.

Additional Tips and Warnings:

• When you decided to call for a technical help. Make sure you tell all the details, tell exactly what is the problem and what were you exactly doing when it occurred. Also write down any error messages. This  may help the technical support agent to easily comprehend your troubleshoot problems.

• Be specific as possible when your talking to a technical support agent. Example: "I see a little red icon on the bottom right of my screen with an "x" on it."

• Computers sometimes tend to crash or freezes when their hard disks become too full. Free up space by deleting unnecessary files. Make sure to empty your recycle bin because it some memory still stays in your hard disk when it is still in the recycle bin.

• When working inside the computer especially with the wires and in the circuits. MAKE SURE TO TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER AND MAKE SURE THE COMPUTER IS UNPLUGGED or else you might be grounded or electrocuted.

How To: Remove Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) Notification

Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) notifications pops-up when your computer did not passed the validation test. The validation test can be failed due to a (non-genuine) pirated copy of Windows XP. 

Sometimes you want your computer to be always up-to-date so you click the balloon on the bottom-right of your screen (the red shield-shape icon with an X on it) and change the Automatic Update settings to "Automatic (recommended)" which is wrong! You should turn off Automatic Update for it allows Windows to get updates from Mircrosoft and then the server detected that you have a pirated copy of Windows XP, so the balloon pops-up automatically every time you log on to your computer. You need to get rid of this problem as it can cause your computer to hang and shutdown randomly.
